CITIZEN SCHOOLS NEED YOU !!!
Citizen Schools is an out of school learning program for middle grade students. It was launched last year at Mount Vernon School and will be going into Vailsburg Middle School this year as well, two great West Ward schools. They have been intimately involved with the Education Workgroup of the West Ward Collective and are providing much needed after school activities and learning for our children.
Citizen Schools needs more volunteers in order to provide the quality services our children need. They need you!!!

THE NEW BOYLAN STREET RECREATION CENTER
I am proud to announce the complete and comprehensive revitalization and restructuring of Boylan Street Recreation Center for the first time in its history!!! As your councilman, I promised to provide more recreational opportunities for the West Ward and we are starting that process. Thanks to Mayor Cory Booker and my colleagues on the Municipal Council, the city is investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in refurbishing the Recreation Center. A special thanks to Division of Public Buildings Director Marilyn Gaynor who is a West Ward resident and who has overseen the city’s renovation from the beginning. Some of the major changes are as follows:
- A retooled pool
- The addition of a new wading pool
- A new computer room that will be outfitted with 10 computers
- A completely repaired roof
- New windows and storage rooms
- Completely renovated bathrooms
- Painting of the entire facility
- Resurfaced basketball court
- New lighting
- A new facility entrance
- Additional recreational equipment
- New trees in the front of the facility
- Land acquisition for parking and for the creation of a tennis court
FUNDRAISER FOR 13TH AVENUE SCHOOL BASED
HEALTH CENTER
I am proud to support the efforts of Ms. Laurel Dumont, Esq. in her attempts to open a school based health center at 13th Avenue School for the 2007-2008 school year. Start up cost capital is needed to construct the space and get then program up and running

NEWARK REENTRY LEGAL SERVICES (ReLeSe) NETWORK
The Newark Reentry Legal Services Network is a six month pilot program launched in May of this year with the support and backing of Mayor Cory Booker, Councilman Rice and the Municipal Council, Seton Hall and Rutgers Law schools, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, Legal Services of New Jersey, Essex-Newark Legal Services, the Newark Alliance and the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice.
This initiative will help assist ex-offenders with critical legal issues that have been identified as significant barriers to reentry. Those areas include: driver’s license issues, municipal court issues, child support, errors on criminal records, licensing, identity fraud, employment and the need to expunge criminal records.
